MOH plans amendments for Dentists Act
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsiaSINGAPORE : The Health Ministry is amending the Dentists Act 1999 to ensure it is relevant to current practice and new development in the field of dentistry.
Key changes include compulsory continuing professional education for dentists, the setting up of a Dental Specialist Register, as well as the registration and regulation of dental care professionals.
There are also amendments to allow the Dental Council to function more effectively as a regulatory body.
MOH says the changes would ensure Singaporeans continue to enjoy good quality dental care as practitioners upgrade themselves and keep up with new technologies.
The establishment of the Dental Specialist Register will aid the growth of specialised dental practice and management of complex dental cases.
The register will list the names of dentists with necessary qualifications and experience, allowing patients to better identify specialists who have the expertise in specific areas.
A public consultation was held between April and May 2004 and the feedback received was taken into consideration for the drafting of the Dentist Amendment BIll.
MOH invites the public review the draft bill at its website www.moh.gov.sg.
All feedback should reach the Ministry by 19 August. - CNA /ct
